Four years ago, Jasmin received her lipedema diagnosis from a phlebologist. Since then, the idea of surgery had been circling in her mind – she began researching and educating herself about her condition. In the course of her research she found us. Jasmin has now successfully completed three surgeries.
When did you first hear about lipedema?
I came across the topic of lipedema in 2020 through a YouTube video. In 2021 I then received the diagnosis from my phlebologist. I was shocked at first, and unfortunately the doctor sent me home very much at a loss, without any recommendations. I had to acquire the knowledge myself. But from that point I knew: I'm not imagining this. That was the first step towards a better body awareness.
What challenges did you face in everyday life?
On warm days the pain was at its worst. From my very first steps in the morning I could feel how heavy and burning my legs were. On really bad days I didn't want to leave the house, not even for a short walk.
I also could never really build a sports routine, even though I found yoga and HIIT training really interesting. After exercise the pain was stronger and I didn't feel good about it at all.
What conservative therapies did you try?
Initially I did little, as I first spent a long time researching on my own. In 2022 I got my first compression garment, but it was poorly fitted, slipped and chafed. Manual lymphatic drainage brought only short-term relief. After a long day in the office, my legs felt just as heavy as before.
I realised: I cannot and do not want to continue living like this for the rest of my life.
What led you to choose med-plast?
In 2023 I began researching clinics near Berlin and booked consultations. At med-plast I was immediately impressed: the consultation was competent, the team listened to me and took time. I particularly appreciated that the clinic specialises in lipedema.
In summer 2024 I attended a second consultation at med-plast and scheduled three surgery dates: - October 2024: front of legs and abdomen - December 2024: back of legs and back - March 2025: arms
How did you experience the surgeries and the recovery?
The lipedema surgeries went well and were stress-free for me. I am normally an anxious person with doctors, had never been operated on before and had never been under anaesthesia. So I was very nervous the first time. But on the day of surgery everything was so well planned and went so quickly that I barely had time to be afraid.
Everyone was very kind and took good care of me. The circulation issues were the hardest part – the most unpleasant aspect of the whole process. After ten days and suture removal it was no more than mild muscle soreness.
How has your life changed since the surgery?
"It is truly like a new life. I can move more freely, have less pain and feel so much more comfortable in my body."
Exercise is also easier again – the fat no longer gets in the way. I eat more consciously but without compulsion. The quality of life is simply on a completely different level.
What advice would you give to others with lipedema?
I would recommend first exhausting the conservative treatment options. A well-fitted flat-knit compression garment can make everyday life easier. However, if the opportunity arises, I would definitely consider surgery.
I also share my experiences publicly on Instagram (@jasmin.filia), because awareness about lipedema is incredibly important. Many women find themselves alone right after the diagnosis – I want to give them courage.
