Jeanette after her lipedema surgery at med-plast Berlin – active and happy
"For the first time in 20 years, I am truly happy in my body." – Jeanette on her long journey through lipedema diagnosis, three surgeries and a completely new sense of life.

How did you get your lipedema diagnosis?

I had heavy legs and bruises that seemed to appear from nowhere since puberty. My GP always told me to exercise more and eat less – yet I was never really overweight, at least not on my upper body. My legs just didn't fit the picture.

After my second pregnancy in 2019, things suddenly got dramatically worse. I could barely climb the stairs in the school building. In 2022, I came across the term lipedema by chance in an online self-help group – and when I read the descriptions, I burst into tears. Finally, all of this had a name.

How did lipedema affect your life as a teacher and mother?

As a primary school teacher, I'm on my feet all day. On good days it was tiring, on bad days it was sheer agony. In the afternoons I often had such heavy, thick legs that all I wanted was to lie down – instead of spending time with my children.

Summer was the worst. For years I stopped wearing dresses. I still remember clearly how my daughter once asked why Mum never comes to the swimming lake. That really hit me hard.

The constant exhaustion was also wearing. Most people around me couldn't understand why I was completely drained after a normal working day. Many thought I was exaggerating – that is incredibly lonely.

How did you find med-plast?

A woman from the online self-help group had just had her second surgery at med-plast and spoke about it so enthusiastically that I immediately looked at the website. What convinced me: this clinic really does nothing else. Over 1,000 lipedema surgeries per year – that's a number that inspires trust.

During my first consultation, one of the plastic surgeons examined me very thoroughly. He explained everything, was honest about what to expect, and put no pressure on me. I drove home that day knowing: this is where I will have my surgery.

What was it like going through three surgeries?

My first surgery was in March 2024 – outer thighs and inner knees. I was as excited as a child on the first day of school, but the team caught me so well that my nerves had already disappeared by the admission interview. The night in the clinic was more pleasant than expected.

In August 2024 came the second surgery: inner thighs and lower legs. Recovery was faster than the first time, because I now knew what to expect.

In January 2025 came the third surgery for my arms – which I had almost forgotten initially because the discomfort in my legs was so dominant. But here too the result was impressive.

In three procedures, a total of approximately 16 litres of pathologically altered fatty tissue were removed from me.

What has changed since the surgeries?

Everything. I truly mean that.

I now cycle to school every morning – I couldn't have imagined that two years ago. Last autumn I went hiking with my family in the Bavarian Forest – four hours straight, without a single complaint.

But what moves me most is the emotional difference. Last summer I wore a summer dress for the first time in 15 years – on a perfectly ordinary Saturday at the farmers' market. My husband looked at me and asked what had gotten into me. I just laughed.

The pain after work is gone. The exhaustion is gone. I have energy for my children in the afternoons again. That is priceless.

What would you say to others affected by lipedema?

Listen to your bodies – and stop blaming yourself. I spent 20 years believing I simply wasn't disciplined enough. That was wrong.

If you have the opportunity to visit a specialist clinic, do it. A good consultation costs nothing and gives you the information you need to make an informed decision.

And one more thing: the three surgeries were not always easy. There are days afterwards when you question whether it was the right decision. Hold on. The moment when you realise how much your life has changed makes everything worthwhile.
