"It feels like a new life." – Nele on her journey with lipedema, the long road to diagnosis, and the decision to have lipedema surgery at med-plast in Berlin.
When did you learn about lipedema and how did the diagnosis change you?
In 2020 I heard about lipedema for the first time. A friend had already had her liposuction, and later I came across it through videos by Domino Kati. Eventually an acquaintance recommended a doctor to me – and there I received my lipedema diagnosis.
On one hand it was a relief to finally have certainty. On the other hand I was in shock. After stopping the pill, my condition had deteriorated significantly.
What problems did you have in everyday life?
Heavy legs, stabbing pains and bruises from the slightest touch defined my everyday life. For a long time I thought this was just normal – until I realised how much it was restricting my life. Climbing stairs, sightseeing on holiday or even blow-drying my hair became an ordeal. My job as a nursery teacher was also demanding, as carrying children often caused great pain.
Summer was particularly bad: I didn't want to hide, but I felt very uncomfortable. Shopping for clothes was frustrating because almost nothing fitted.
How did you experience the consultation at med-plast?
I had my first consultation during a holiday in Berlin. The atmosphere was completely different from a typical medical practice – warm, understanding and professional. I immediately felt taken seriously and well looked after.
How has your life changed after the lipedema surgery?
In total I had four surgeries, during which 28 litres of pathologically increased fat were removed. My body has achieved something remarkable in just seven months.
Of course healing takes time, but even now my everyday life is much easier and many things that were difficult before I can now do without pain.
Sport is enjoyable again – my first run after the surgeries was an unforgettable moment. Previously barely thinkable, I could suddenly simply run without it hurting. I also have more energy in everyday life: walks, movement and work feel significantly lighter.
Alongside the physical change, my self-image has also improved greatly. I feel more comfortable, move through life with more confidence and have gradually gained a new sense of being.
How was your experience at med-plast?
The decision to choose med-plast was absolutely the best. The entire team – from reception through doctors to nursing staff – was incredibly friendly. The food was also excellent and incomparable to a normal hospital.
Since I don't live in Berlin, it was practical to be able to do follow-up appointments via Zoom. This flexibility gave me a great deal of reassurance.
What tips do you have for others affected?
Get advice and take your symptoms seriously. Many people hesitate for a long time because they first think about the costs – yet health, both physical and mental, is priceless. Lipedema surgery is not a purely cosmetic procedure, but an important medical step that can restore an enormous amount of quality of life.
Anyone who decides on the procedure is investing not only in their body, but also in a more active, happier life. So: invest in yourself – you are worth it.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
The time after the surgeries was not always easy. There were tears and doubts, especially after the first surgery. But then it got better: less pain, more freedom of movement, more confidence.
Even if some people don't understand – stay strong and trust your path. It is worth it.
